the controversy surrounding Maulana Tariq Jameel Stokes’ toxic religiopolitical brew

After his interview with journalist Ameer Abbas for Bol News was broadcast, televangelist Maulana Tariq Jameel faced harsh criticism.

Jameel compared Muawiyah bin Yazid’s rejection of taking over after his father passed away, citing the tragedy at Karbala, to what he claimed was the unabashed avarice for power among modern Pakistani politicians. According to him, Muawiyah bin Yazid rejected the Umayyad throne because it was marred by the blood of Ahle Bayt.

He claimed that Pakistani politicians had certain flaws and that they would do anything to hold onto their positions of power. He acknowledged that the Tableeghi Jamaat generally avoided politics, but claimed that out of loyalty to his country, he had no choice but to speak.

The televangelist cited horse trading as an example of this, which occurred after a successful vote of no confidence was passed against then-prime minister Imran Khan. He implied that Pakistani politicians had destroyed the country for a few pennies. Jameel claimed that although Pakistan had produced many notable people, he still awaited the day when the country would be home to just one politician who would stop trading his soul for power.

Unsurprisingly, the interview sparked a hornet’s nest. Shah Owais Noorani of the Jamiat-e-Ulema Pakistan used the microblogging site Twitter to compare Jameel to a fitna (affliction).
