Who is Pervez Khattak

Serving as the chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during PTI’s government tenure from 2013-2018, Pervez Khattak has been one of the prominent faces of the party.

The 68-year old Pervez Khattak belongs to Manki Sharif village in Nowshera district. He is the son of noted government contractor Hastam Khan Khattak (late), who was considered among the leading builders in the pre-partition subcontinent.

Pervez Khattak received his early education at the Aitchison College, Lahore, more or less in the same years when PTI chairman Imran Khan was also a student and both were reported to be class-fellows. He did his Senior Cambridge from Aitchison College and later completed graduation from Gordon College, Rawalpindi.

He started his political career as a member of the district council in 1983. Later he was elected to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly five times, the last time on May 11, 2013. He remained minister of industries twice and once served as irrigation minister in the ANP-led government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. However, he resigned from his office in protest against the corruption in the provincial coalition government.

He also remained the first district nazim in Nowshera. His cousin Nasrullah Khattak was the chief minister of the province when Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was the prime minister of Pakistan. During his political career, Pervez Khattak also remained the provincial president of the Pakistan People’s Party-Sherpao (now renamed Qaumi Watan Party).
