Police posture

Imran Riaz Khan had a first information report (FIR) filed against him in Attock, according to police, who informed the media outlet. The journalist has been charged in numerous cases, all of which, in his words, stem from his refusal to “stop speaking the truth.”

Earlier FIRs

In numerous cities, including Muzzafargarh and Sargodha, FIRs were filed against journalists. The allegations state that the anchor’s actions were a serious crime and a violation of the Constitution because they hurt the feelings of Pakistani citizens.

Controversy

The Dawn news outlet reports that Riaz had “directly addressed Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa and alleged that he was threatened after asking questions from military sources about the country’s current political and economic situation” in a video uploaded to YouTube the day before his arrest. Riaz had been critical of the Shehbaz Sharif-led administration. Riaz also mentioned receiving threats against his family.

Condemnation

Imran Khan, Fawad Chaudhry, Asad Umar, Shahbaz Gill, and other PTI leaders spoke out in defence of the journalist and denounced the arrest after it had taken place.

Imran Khan, a former prime minister, vehemently denounced the “arbitrary arrest” and urged the populace and media to “unite and stand up against this fascism.”

PTI party members will protest at press clubs across the nation, according to PTI leader Asad Umar, against what he called a “attempt to suppress freedom of expression.”

Plea resolved

Imran Riaz Khan, a senior journalist, filed a petition against his detention, but the Islamabad High Court dismissed it after determining that the matter was outside of its purview.

Khan’s legal team requested that IHC begin contempt proceedings against the police after his arrest. IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah sent notices to the chief commissioner and police chief of Islamabad in a late-night action.

Imran Riaz Khan’s attorney claimed during today’s hearing that his client was taken into custody from the Islamabad Toll Plaza. The chief justice stated that because the arrest was made in Attock, the case was outside of the purview of the IHC and advised the attorney to file a petition with the Lahore High Court.

How secure is Pakistan for reporters?

Such claims about free speech are made by both journalists and activists for similar ideological reasons. Pakistan is one of the most hazardous countries in the world for journalists, claims David Griffiths, Amnesty International’s (AI) deputy Asia Pacific director.

AI documented 34 cases of journalists being killed between the restoration of democratic rule in Pakistan in 2008 and April 2014 in a report that was published last year.
