Police across US cities were on alert and stepped up security as director Todd Philips’ Joker released on 4 October in the US. The measures were implemented in the wake of the 2012 Colorado shooting which took place inside a packed theatre during a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises.
‘Joker’ which features its protagonist as a bullied loner turning to violence has sparked fears among US citizens and authorities of a repeat of the 2012 deadly mass shooting.
According to a report in Reuters, police in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago said in statements that while they had no specific threats, they were deploying additional officers or closely monitoring movie theatres where the film is playing. Officers in plainclothes will also be stationed inside cinema theatres.
