When Harry Potter actors Emma Watson and Tom Felton appeared together on social media, everyone speculated about some sort of star-crossed, inter-Hogwarts romance. According to Entertainment Tonight, when asked about a possible relationship with Watson, Felton explained that they’re just good friends, albeit there is “something” between them that’s very specific.
“We are something, if that makes any sense. We’ve been very close for a long time. I adore her,” Felton said. “I think she’s fantastic. Hopefully, she returns the compliment.”
Felton went on to explain that he is close to several of his Harry Potter friends and that they chat all the time. And, in response to fans’ not-so-subtle aspirations for a real-life romance between the two, Felton adds that, though he admires her, any Malfoy-Hermione love is only in the imaginations and emotions of die-hard Harry Potter readers and viewers.
“As far as the romantic side of it, I think that’s a Slytherin/Gryffindor thing rather than a Tom and Emma thing,” he added. “I absolutely think the world of her. I think to be a part of what we’ve all been a part of, but for her to be the only girl, certainly the youngest one on set, to grow up with what she had to grow up with was incredibly exciting. You’re going to get me teary now, but no, I think she’s a fantastic influence on the world.”
Despite the fact that they’ve been working together for almost two decades, Felton believes the cast will never grow apart.
“We do stay in touch, quite frequently,” Felton said. “It is nice that we’re in sort of four different corners of the earth and yet when we catch up, it feels like yesterday that this was all going on.”
Felton and Watson’s chemistry was also praised by co-star Rupert Grint. In 2019, he stated that there was a link between the two.
“There was always something,” Grint told ET. “There was a little bit of a spark.”
