A meeting of the Assembly will be called after that, and an election schedule for the new Chief Minister will be released.

On Monday, Prime Minister Imran Khan announced his resignation as chief minister and nominated Chaudhry Pervez Elahi for the position.

After incumbent Usman Buzdar presented his resignation to the premier on Monday, the PML-Q finally backed the embattled prime minister in exchange for PM Imran conceding Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi as the PTI’s candidate for Punjab chief minister.

With ten and five seats in Punjab and the Centre, respectively, the PML-Q is a key ally of the PTI government. The Chaudhrys’ support for Prime Minister Imran Khan was interpreted as a resurgence of his hopes to save his government.

On Wednesday, however, a disgruntled faction of the PTI’s Aleem Khan group refused to support Pervaiz Elahi for the position of Punjab Chief Minister.

Khalid Mahmood, a disgruntled group’s spokesperson, claimed that a “dishonest and incompetent” person had been forced upon Punjab for four years – an apparent reference to Usman Buzdar – and that now Pervez Elahi had been nominated.

“Elahi’s nomination is opposed by every committed PTI worker,” he said. How do you justify the existence of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf if Pervaiz Elahi is to bring about a Naya (new) Pakistan, according to the spokesperson?

The Aleem Khan group, according to the spokesperson, will unconditionally support the opposition candidate.
