The police have registered a case against 1,900 participants including PML-N leader Shehbaz Sharif, PPP Punjab leaders for holding the opposition’s rally on the Mall Road. The rally was organised yesterday in the connection with observing Black Day though out the country. The opposition parties announced to observe July 25 as black day.
The general elections were organised on July 25, 2018 last year in which PTI emerged as the largest party. The opposition parties cried foul and declared the elections flawed and rigged. The opposition parties refused to accept the election results demanded to probe the allegations of rigging and political engineering.
The case was registered under SHO Civil Lines, with multiple charges against those present at the opposition’s rally in Lahore. The FIR nominated Qamar Zaman Kaira, Waheed Gul, Rabia Naseem, Uzma Bukhari etc. The FIR stated that several protesters were carrying sticks and enclosed the Mall Road, causing inconvenience to the public. It further said that protesters broke police barriers, made incendiary speeches, and chanted anti-government slogans.
This is the second such case of political nature that was registered against opposition leaders and hundreds of political workers. First one was registered against PML-N leaders including Maryam Nawaz and hundreds of PML-N workers. The PTI claimed not to use the police for political purposes. But it seems that PTI government in Punjab is using the police against its political opponents.
The PTI government seems in moving in the direction to criminalise the political activity in the country. Nearly 4,000 political leaders and workers have been booked under different sections. The most common is to chant anti-government slogan. It has become a crime to chant slogan against PTI government. It seems that PTI government wants pro-government slogans from opposition parties.
On Friday, PML-N leader Shehbaz Sharif and PPP Punjab leaders Qamar Zaman Kaira and Ch Manzoor led their respective rallies rally towards Lahore’s Mall Road from Model town. Shahbaz Sharif addressed workers in Model Town, saying those who have wreaked destruction on Pakistan would have to pay and those who stole people’s jobs would be held accountable.
