New audio and video leaks have tarnished Pakistani politics, and in the midst of the never-ending leaks saga, a clip purporting to be of the country’s defense minister’s daughter has appeared online.
PTI trolls and social media users shared the 30-second clip from what appears to be a nightclub widely and criticized outspoken minister Khawaja Asif for having “dual standards”; many cited the PML-N minister’s previous comments in which he made fun of women who cheered at PTI rallies.
In the video clip, a woman dancing while sporting a red dress with black culottes and a blazer. In the video, which was captured by a clubgoer using a handheld camera, the girl’s hands flailed wildly and swung in time to the music. Other clubgoers could also be seen shaking their legs in the footage.
Under strobe lights and Punjabi music, it appears that people are having a good time in the nightclub, but the video went viral online because PTI activists and PML-N detractors shared it without verifying the information.
A number of YouTubers and influencers joined the fray and unsubstantiated attacks a Sharif’s cabinet member, spreading the propaganda for the sake of views.
While Khawaja Asif and other PML-N leaders remained mum about the smear campaign, some social media users disproved the claim that the image came from an Indian dance party.
As the trend spread, many users criticized political rivals for stooping to a new low as these leaks appeared with the turn of the calendar and both PTI and PML-N were the targets. It appears that it was spread in order to harm Khawaja Asif’s and the ruling party’s political standing because they have continued to criticize Imran Khan’s personal life. Asif is one of the most senior members of the PML-N.
