Fire and explosions at a Russian munitions depot ravaged villages in the region of Ryazan on Wednesday. A witness said ‘shrapnel and ash fell from the sky’.

As the fire blazes on today, Russian authorities evacuated more than 2,300 people from villages in the area, five people were taken to hospital.

The depot housed 110 storage facilities containing missiles and artillery munitions, and rounds could be heard exploding once every 5-10 seconds, the RIA news agency cited the emergency services as saying.

The Emergencies Ministry said a motorway was being closed down and that at least 14 villages were evacuated within a five-kilometre radius of the depot 260 kilometres (162 miles) southeast of Moscow, the Interfax news agency reported.

Fires and explosions at ammunition depots have plagued the Russian army for years and drawn criticism of lax safety standards.

Russian emergency services deployed extra resources on Thursday to deal with the aftermath of a blaze at an ammunition depot in the Ryazan Region, the Emergencies Ministry said in a statement.

Vehicles and emergency workers from Moscow and the Tula Region are being brought in to work at the scene.

The Emergencies Ministry plans to have a total of 392 workers, 81 hardware units, including 36 fire trucks working to extinguish the blaze, the statement said.
