The Roger Ailes Scandal: What Happened?
The new film “Bombshell,” which has been nominated for two Golden Globes and four SAG Awards, tells the actual storey of the se**xual harassment scandal that brought down Roger Ailes, the Republican Party’s kingmaker and the leader of Fox News. Ailes was a powerful figure who counselled right-wing leaders such as Donald Trump and Richard Nixon, and was accused of using scare tactics to manage his company.
Former Fox News staffers claim he planted hidden surveillance cameras throughout the company’s headquarters.
The Roger Ailes Scandal Is Expounded
In 2016, ex-Fox reporter Gretchen Carlson filed a se**xual harassment complaint against Ailes, which sparked an internal investigation at the news network and, eventually, a wave of se**xual harassment claims against Ailes. Megyn Kelly, the network’s rising star at the time, was one of the women who claimed to have been harassed by the network’s president.
Ailes was forced to resign from his post in July of that year after more than 20 women accused him of se**xual harassment. He died a year later, at the age of 77. Nicole Kidman plays Carlson in Bombshell, which releases internationally on December 20th. After filing her claim, Carlson primarily watches and waits on the sidelines, expecting that other Fox women would buttress her credibility with their own assertion.
Kelly is played by Charlize Theron, who is wondering whether or not to jeopardise her career by telling her own storey.Kayla is a fictitious woman played by Margot Robbie who aspires to be a Fox TV anchor but is harassed by Ailes (played by John Lithgow) and the network’s misogynistic atmosphere. The film stars Kate McKinnon, Allison Janney, and Connie Britton in supporting parts and is directed by Jay Roach (Trumbo, Meet the Parents). It advances at a fast pace, similar to The Big Short (with which it shares a screenwriter).
Roger Ailes was a pivotal figure in the evolution of television. Ailes rose to prominence as a Republican political adviser early in his career, and he is credited with helping both George H.W. Bush and Ronald Reagan win elections. Later, he went into television, where he helped a struggling CNBC become profitable in the 1990s. Ruper Murdoch (played by Malcolm McDowell in the film) recruited Ailes to create Fox News in 1996, while he was chairman and CEO of NewsCorp.
